Midland Kiwanis funds gazebo roof repair at Cleveland Manor
MIDLAND, Mich. (April 2, 2025) – The gazebo at Cleveland Manor apartments has a brand new roof, thanks to a grant from the Midland Kiwanis Foundation.
Cleveland Manor is home to older adults and people with disabilities living on a limited income. The building sits on more than 8 acres in a residential area of Midland, with the gazebo serving as a relaxing place for residents to enjoy the park-like surroundings. Midland Kiwanis funded and provided labor for the gazebo’s original construction in 2012.
“We love the gazebo,” said Trudy Laufer, Executive Director of Cleveland Manor. “It’s a beautiful amenity on our property, and it’s even been the site of two weddings involving our residents!”
Cleveland Manor applied for a grant through the Service Club Alliance to fix the gazebo’s cedar roof, which had deteriorated with age and suffered from storm damage. The Midland Kiwanis Foundation approved $4,905 for repairs.
“We have deep ties to Midland Kiwanis,” said Laufer. “The club was involved with the design and construction of our first apartment building, and many club members have served on our board of directors.”
Sugar Construction replaced the gazebo’s roof in March. Cleveland Manor used a portion of funds donated by the late Sandy Simmons, a former board president, to cover the remaining costs of the project.
The Service Club Alliance, an effort of the Midland Area Community Foundation, is a partnership between Midland area service clubs that coordinates grantmaking efforts for community organizations. The Alliance simplifies the grant process by using a joint application for applicants who provide support for Midland County residents.
