Cleveland Manor receives Community Foundation grant for pavilion project

MIDLAND, Mich. (October 12, 2023) – The Midland Area Community Foundation has awarded a $100,500 grant to Cleveland Manor for the construction of a new pavilion.

Cleveland Manor is home to older adults and people with disabilities living on a limited income. This vulnerable population continues to struggle with feelings of isolation exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Even now, after the public health emergency has officially ended, many people are wary of gathering together in enclosed spaces.

“We’ve really been trying to step up our activities and events over the past year or so,” said Trudy Laufer, Executive Director of Cleveland Manor. “We need a space where residents feel comfortable gathering that’s also accessible to people with restricted mobility.”

The Cleveland Manor Pavilion Project was designed to address these concerns by giving residents a place to deepen their connection to the community without being in a confined space. Initial plans call for a 24’x44’ structure on a concrete pad, with ADA-approved picnic tables and a grill. The intention is to encourage interaction with neighbors, staff, friends, caregivers, and family members.

The pavilion will also serve as a gathering place that can be utilized by community partners including Senior Services, Disability Network, and more. These organizations serve people who often lack the social and emotional support systems available to the general population, due to barriers such as transportation, mobility, digital connectivity, and affordability.

The Midland Area Community Foundation exists to cultivate the power of giving within our community, support long-term transformation, and help ensure all residents thrive. The grant awarded to Cleveland Manor aligns with one of the Community Foundation’s focus areas, “caring for our people.” Funding comes from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) through a partnership between the Community Foundation and the County of Midland.

Cleveland Manor is located at 2200 Cleveland Avenue in Midland, Michigan. It is managed by a nonprofit organization and provides 196 apartments for older adults and people with disabilities.
